Cirque Du Soleil

We really enjoyed the 3D Cirque Du Soleil Worlds Apart.  Bri was thrilled with it and so was I.

The only thing that I didn't like was them using Beatles music in the one part.  I like the Beatles just as much as anyone else.  But one reason that I love Cirque so much is the interesting music that they sing and use.  I could have done without Beatles.

Anywhoo, I really enjoyed it.  I had looked into going to the Toyota Center in Houston to see Cirque at one time.  I nearly had a stroke over the ticket prices.  I guess that I got off easy at 15.25 for the two of us to go.  LOL

I promised my daughter that I would go to the library site and order some more of the Cirque DVDs.  What is your favorite??  I love Varikai (sorry, I know that is spelled wrong).

Have a wonderful New Year.

Long time, no post!!!!

Ok, I have been very absent from my blogs.

Hopefully, 2013 will be a better year.

I am taking my daughter out to the movies this afternoon.  We are going to see the new Cirque Du Soleil movie.  I think it will be very interesting.  It is 3D, so it should be wild.

Here is a link so you can check it out:  http://www.worldsaway3d.com/#gallery_page

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and will have a happy and healthy 2013!!

We are at the sick house

My dear Rooster has been sick for two days.  He picked up a nasty stomach virus.  So that has been lovely.  It has piled up the laundry really quick.  Poor guy.  He finally has stopped getting sick.  So I think he is on the mend.

Needless to say, I haven't been doing much else.  I did work on my 2nd Baby Ripple.

I also bought some wool for my sister's boyfriend's Christmas gift.  You can check out my Flosses and Crosses Blog for the crafty details.

Note to self:  Always keep a 12 pack or 2 liter of 7up or the like in the house.  A 5am run to see what is open is not a fun thing.  LOL

Are you thinking about Thanksgiving yet?  I am starting to think about turkey.  What are you making for Christmas?  I am thinking Ham.

Have a wonderful day.

Fall cleaning

Am I the only one that cleans in the Fall like a Spring clean?  I like to clean and clear before the holidays.

If you follow my home school blog, you have read my post about cleaning bedrooms.  Bri is having trouble getting and keeping her room clean.  So we are spending the week/weekend cleaning her room.  Well, her more than me.  I am hoping that she will see that taking the time to put stuff away and keep stuff organized is so much easier than a big clean that is overwhelming and takes up valuable time.  Her deadline is Saturday morning.  Then I am coming in.  (OH NO!!)

We have decided to sign a year long lease at the apartment that we are in.  We have looked at other places and they are more money and less space.  I am not really happy with some of the neighbors here.  Thankfully, the stinky and gross neighbors have moved.  Too bad the loud obnoxious ones didn't move with them.  LOL  But, I like our two bedroom, two bath, 1000 sq foot apartment.  I don't think I could ever go back to one bath.  Yes, I have to take care of two baths, but it makes things easier.  Plus the views here are great.  The boat marina behind us and the lake in front of us.  Plenty of wonderful sunsets and tons of seabirds to enjoy.  Now if someone would gag the neighbor's kids.

I don't know about you, but when I was young, you didn't run around screaming outside until who knows what time.  My backside was in the house as the street lights came on or else.  We didn't scream and make a bunch of noise because God forbid that you woke up some one's old man that had to work the late shift.  But there seems to be a huge lack of respect and people who actually parent their kids.  But I guess that is a whole other argument.  I dread to think on what this world is going to be like when these kids get to adults.  But I am sure this is a continuing thing adults say.

Take care and have a wonderful day.

Bells, Bells, Bells

Some years back, I joined the Bell Choir at the church that I belonged to in Ohio.  I really enjoyed it.

Fast forward several years.  I recently joined the Bell Choir at the church that I belong to now.

The first practice was hard because it had been a very long time since I had played.  I was a bit discouraged.  But the director and the other members cheered me on.

I went back to practice last night and found that I was getting back into the groove.  I had practiced all week.

Yes, everyone thought I was crazy with my invisible bells.  LOL  My daughter goes "Mom, what in the world are you doing?"

If you have ever heard a Bell choir play, it is very beautiful.  I think that I will always remember the echo of the bells ringing thru the old 200 year old plus church that I was a member of in Ohio.  And the bats.  For some reason, bell practice made the bats fly out of the steeple and around the sanctuary.  Then there was ringing and screaming.  LOL

God Bless and have a wonderful day.

I normally don't listen to movie hype

I am not one to go for hype.  But I reserved "Wettest County in the World" by Matt Bondurant.  It is the book that the movie "Lawless" is made from.  I am a history buff and decided to read the book.

The day that I got this book, I started to read it.  Some hours later, I had finished it.  I could not put it down.  I just had to know what happened next.  It was very violent and really nasty at some points.  I am very glad I decided to read the book and not watch the movie.   Paybacks are very nasty.

I tried to keep the time frame in mind.  It was a violent time.  Money, men, and booze is a really bad mix.  On the other hand, what was someone to do at that time?  It was the depression and people had families.  So I will not judge this.

The only thing I didn't like about the book was in parts, it jumps from one time frame to another.  I thought it was a bit distracting.  I don't like time jumping in books.

If you have read it, let me know your thoughts.

Have a wonderful day.

Space Shuttle Flyover

You know sometimes that things capture your imagination when you are a child?  Well, as a child in Ohio, I can remember watching the Space Shuttle takeoff and dream what it might be like to go to space.  Is this not something that children dream of?

Today, I stood with my child at the edge of Clear Lake.  You see, we live down the street from Johnson Space Center in Texas.  We had been waiting since 9 am or so to hope to get to see the flyover.  We saw it from a distance and I went back into the apartment happy.  It was really neat to have seen it.  Even at a distance.  Then I heard a jet very loud.  It seems that the plane/Shuttle had made a bank turn and was coming back over.  So I grabbed my daughter and ran back outside.  We crossed the apartment parking lot and stood by the water.  It made another turn and ended up coming right over Clear Lake.  I stood shaking like a little kid as it went RIGHT OVER MY HEAD!!!!  I was watching the Shuttle pass over my head.  I was almost giddy.  I had tears in my eyes.  It was almost surreal.  I got on the phone and told my Mom that I was watching it go over my head.  She was laughing at me.  Then I called my hubby and was so excited that he was laughing at me too.  For a moment, I was a kid.  My daughter was yelling at me about it being so cool.  As a walked back to my apartment, I had to laugh at myself a bit.  I was as giddy as a schoolgirl.  What a wonderful gift and memory this has been.

I wasn't really happy with my move from Ohio to Texas.  I really miss my old life and my old house.  But this day reminds me to give new things a chance.  I would never have had this back in Ohio.  A small piece of a child's dream almost close enough to touch.

God Bless and have a wonderful day.

New Doll

Bri and I made this doll this morning.  It's a princess doll.  Bri used her allowance money to buy the kit from Hobby Lobby.

Her name is Petal.

Have a great day!

A new way to shampoo hair?

I tried a new thing yesterday.  I went the no poo way.

The newest thing is Wen.  It is a no shampoo way to clean your hair.  But it is very expensive.

I ran across this recipe on one of my favorite sites:
http://www.livingonadime.com/homemade-shampoo-recipe/

I did it yesterday and I am shocked and happy with the results.  I used a double recipe since I was in the pool.  My thin, hug my head hair is so different.  It seems thicker, smoother, and easier to manager.  No tangles.

It costs a few cents per use.  I can get use to that.

My daughter who is seven was very interested as she doesn't like the washing process.  We will be trying it on her next.  The only question she had was if I was going to smell like salad all day.  LOL  I didn't.

Try it out and let me know how it works for you!!!

Hopped on the homemade laundry soap bandwagon!!

Ok.  I finally broke down and made my own laundry soap.  I was surprized how easy it was.  This is the recipe that I used.

1 box Zote flakes  (17.6 oz)  It said it was equal to two bars
2 cups Borax
2 cups Washing Soda

I just mixed it all in a bucket.  I used a 1/4 cup for a load along with a scoop of Sun Oxy and my Downy Ball with vinegar in it.

They were nice and clean and soft.

The next time I will:

Grate my own bars to get a finer powder or put the flakes in a processor.  I found a flake or two in my towels.  I mixed it with some hot water for the second load and it worked fine.

I ordered some EO to scent the vinegar.  The clothes didn't really have a smell.  Kind of like drying outside.  Fresh.

I put the bucket in the bathroom under the sink.  That way it is out of the way and I don't have to worry about the dog getting into it.

Have you tried it?  What do you think?  What do you use different?

Have a wonderful day.

One Thousand Gifts

I have just started reading this book.  I do have to say that it is very hard to put down.  Gives you alot to think about.  I think that I want to start a list of my own.  I think it would make me see more in life.

Have you read it?  What are your thoughts?

The Space Shuttle outside my window???

Yes, I got to watch the Space Shuttle mockup drift past my apartment on it's way to the JSC.  Wild!!

A bit far away in the photo.  But very cool.  The lake was full of boats and the sky was full of helicopters.

Have a great day.

Quick check in and a recipe

I found a wonderful recipe for meatloaf!!

Look here:  http://proverbs31jewels.org/2012/05/grams-meatloaf/

There is so much to look at on this blog too.  Please take the time to check it out.

What is your favorite meatloaf recipe?  Would you share it in the comments?  Looking forward to seeing some new ones.

It has been hot here.  Bri and I have gone swimming as much as we can.  My Rooster went with us on Monday as he was off for the holiday.  But I don't go for more than an hour.  I am very pale and it sun is relentless here in Texas.  I burned so many times as a child that I am very careful about it now.

This is a view of the pelicans on the posts that use to be a dock by my apartment.  You are looking across Clear Lake.  It empties into Galveston Bay which would be to the left.  There are many fancy and expensive houses across the lake.  Very pretty.

This is an apartment building on my right.  It is very neat.  I think it is called Endeavor.  I have never been in it.  But I have heard that it is very nice.

Most people don't think of beaches, palm trees, pelicans, etc when they think of Texas.  I sure didn't.  But I am learning to love Coastal Texas.

Have a wonderful day.

Monday Morning

It has really warmed up here.  We have been in the 90's for the past few days.  I am not ready for it, but it is here.  The pool opens Friday.  So I am looking forward to getting some swimming in.

Here are a few pictures of my plants.  I had to tie up one of my tomato plants.

They love this warm weather and warm nights.

I am planning to use a calendar to help me keep on track.  I got a small one at Mardel.  It has a whole month and then a weekly one.

I want to keep track of homeschooling, chores, etc all in the same place.  I also have a desk calendar on my desk so I can write on it so everyone can see that one.

It was such a nice morning, I went on a walk and took some pictures.  I never left my apartment complex.  For those who have seen me talking about fishing off the parking lot, you can tell how close the water is here.

We really do love it here.

Told you we could fish from the parking lot!!  LOL

Have a wonderful day!

Do you have overripe bananas?

I have done banana bread, banana cake, etc.  But here is a great way to use bananas.  Banana Jam.  Yes, you read it right.  I made some years back and the neighbor kids ate it right out of the jar.  I saw this on this blog and had share.  Check it out!

http://joyofdesserts.blogspot.com/2008/03/over-ripe-bananas-make-wonderful-jams.html

You have to scroll down a bit to get to the recipe.  I used fresh lemons instead of limes and didn't use rum in it.  But try it out.  It is a neat change of pace.

I just bought a set of ebooks.   http://www.livingonadime.com/store/keeping-clean-ebook-series/

I am so happy with the books!!!  I think it was worth every penny that I gave for them.  So many ideas and hints.  This site and all the ebooks that are sold here are wonderful!!  Please check them out.

Also here is a recipe for homemade strawberry fruit leather.  So much better than store bought.
http://www.livingonadime.com/strawberry-leather/

I can't say enough about this great site.  Spend a few minutes there and you will get tons of ideas.

Have a wonderful afternoon!!

I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day!!

I got so spoiled this year!!  We went to Chilies for lunch and we wandered around in World Market.  I got Morrocan Rose soap petals, Jasmine tea, and candy.

I also got this ring:

Those of you who know me, you know that I am not a ring person.  But this ring is gorgeous!!  It is so delicate.

Then I also got this necklace:

Yes, I love dragonflies and butterflies!!

So I am spoiled!!  Bri and Dad went shopping on Saturday.  I also got a beautiful card drawn by Bri.  So I had a wonderful day.  The weather was nice, though a bit muggy.  No rain.

Have a wonderful day.

After a stormy night

We got really heavy storms here last night.  I think it stormed from like 9:30 pm all the way thru until 7 am.  So much lightning.

Bri was at a sleepover with her American Heritage Girls troop.  She told me they screamed a couple of times from the lightning.  I could just picture a room full of giggly girls in a thunderstorm.  LOL

My plants took a beating, but look pretty good.

This is my buddy Jack.  He is so sweet.  He belongs to the downstairs neighbor.

He is hunting the might lizards.  He likes to come up and sleep on our chairs that are outside our apartment.  I keep a box of cat treats on hand.  I also leave him fresh water.  He is always in danger of being loved to death.  LOL

This is our dog Katy.  She is a sweetie too.

If you are into organics, but have a hard time finding them, this site was recommended to me from Mary Jane's Farm magazine.  Check them out.

I have a sick Rooster home today.  He got a nice cold/sore throat for his birthday yesterday.  Poor thing.  Plus the humid conditions and hot temps isn't making he feel much better.

Working on getting my homeschool area organized.  I ordered my curriculum on Saturday and am now waiting for it to come.  You can go to my homeschool blog to check out what I am using.  The link is on my sidebar.

Bri is working on her bedroom.  We took all the CD's and DVD's out of those plastic cases and put them in a book type storage that I picked up at Wal-mart yesterday on clearance for 28.00.  It holds 352 CD/DVDs.  This has opened up so much room.  It is so much neater and takes up so much less room.  Plus cuts down on looking for the right case.  I have decided that Wii games are to stay in there cases.  We don't have many, and don't plan on getting many.  Still trying to come up with a solution for DS games.  She has a little thing with room in the center for just the games.  But she has quite a few DS games.  I hate all the cases strewn around or wasting the time looking for the right case or all the space taken up by the case.  Any suggestions?  Would it hurt to just put all of them in a plastic bin?

Well, I need to get back to laundry, get my plants watered, and get the hamster cage cleaned.

Have a wonderful afternoon.

Is it spring or summer???

Feels like summer here now.  It has been very muggy.

My plants love it:

There are flowers all over the tomatoes and looks like they are coming on the peppers.  I am thinking about fresh tomatoes!!

I went crazy Spring cleaning.  I got so much done.  I will post some pictures soon.

Found a wonderful new church.  We like it very much.  They also have a knit/crochet group.  Very welcoming and nice.

I have posted some pictures over on my Flosses and Crosses blog of some projects.  Please pop over and check it out.

Take care and have a wonderful weekend.

Rooster on vacation

It is so nice to have my Rooster home this week on vacation.  We don't have big plans.  Mostly just hang out and enjoy the break from his stressful and physical job.

We hope to get to Galveston.  It has been raining all day here.  We had to pay some bills, so we just walked around the mall and had Arby's for lunch.  That is something we haven't had for a long time.

Boy, there has been so many pelicans around here.  Rooster tells me that it is mating season for pelicans.  I really enjoy watching them get fish.  It is amazing to me how close they fly to the water.  It seems like inches above the water.  They are so big.  I couldn't believe what a large bird they are until I saw one up pretty close.

This whole town is pretty much a bird santuary.  That is the best part about living here.

That is about all for now.  Take care and have a wonderful night.

Garden at an Apartment???

I have found a way to satisfy my gardening instincts.  I found these bags at Walmart for 5.00 for each bag.

I planted two cherry tomatoes, two green peppers, a banana pepper (that is what happens when you don't double check the pepper you are buying), a slicer type tomato, and basil.  Pretty good for bags on the walkway of your apartment.

I am also putting up a picture of Bri in her Easter dress that her Grammy sent her.

Can you tell it is warm here?  It was about 82 or so.

Love those little bare toes!!  She is trying to grow her hair out since the hair cutting incident.  I was teasing her that she looks like Justin Beber because her hair covers her nose.  She gave me that disgusted look.  I am glad you can't see her lovely bruised and bug bitten legs.  She spent three hours at the park last Thursday and her legs look like they went thru a machine!!!!  Always before pictures she has to cut, bruise, or something herself.  LOL

Also here is my Rooster.  Everyone is in the summer spirit with all the warm weather.

I am trying to finish my Spring cleaning.  I got extra help when I got a notice that they were spraying apartments for insects.  So I had to pull everything from my kitchen.  It really gave me a chance to look at all the expiration dates and such.  I also tossed away half empty stuff that got pushed to the back.  Thankfully, the company that did the spraying used a natural product and the only remaining smell was a very faint lemon smell.  So it was too bad.  So I let it dry for three days then wiped the cupboards with Clorax cleanups and put all the stuff away.  It made me rethink how to put stuff away and I bought a step stool.  So I am making better use of my small cupboards and space now.  I am so grateful for the two plastic shelves Rooster got me for in our walkin closet in our bedroom.

Take Care and God Bless!

Where do you stand on SGK?

Where do you stand on the whole Susan Komen thing?  I would like your comments.  Please keep it civil or it will be deleted.  We are all women and I would like to know your reason for supporting or not supporting SGK now.  And I don't want to hear bashing of political parties.  That doesn't help anyone.

Personnally, I don't give cash donations to big business type "charities".  I go local with my time, money, etc.  My concern is the big amounts of money that goes to administration, etc instead of to what it is suppose to go to.

Thank you in advance for your comments.  But again, please be civil and no back and forth.  If you want to argue, please take it to your email.  Thanks again.

Tuesday Tales

This is a Seeing Red Exchange that I had in one of my Yahoo Groups that I belong to.  Shared Crosses.  I love these ladies!!

Katy is doing better.  We had to rush her to ER last Thursday morning.  It seems that she had a battle with a brown recluse spider and the spider won.  Katy swelled up and looked like a racoon with big red eyes.  This was 2 am.  What a time to find a emergency vet office.  Thankfully, there is one 16 miles from us.  They were waiting for us and took her right back.

I found a really good sounding cookie bar.  So I want to share:

Buttermilk Cinnamon Bars

1 1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup shredded coconut
1/2 cup nuts (chopped)
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 tea salt
1 tea cinnamon
1 tea baking powder
1 cup buttermilk
1 tea vanilla

Preheat oven to 350.

Blend sugars, flour, and shortening together until mixture resembles coarse meal.  Combine 2 cups of this mixture with coconut and nuts.  Press lightly in to a greased 9x13 pan.  Combine all the remaining ingredients and mix well.  Spread over first layer and bake for 45 minutes.  While still warm, frost with a thin confectioners' sugar icing.  Cool in pan on wire rack and cut into bars.

Icing:

1 pound confectioners' sugar
1 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
1 tea vanilla extract

Blend to a spreadable consistency.

Have a wonderful day.

Where did January go???

My Goodness!!  I can't believe how fast time is flying.

I have an update on my blog http://www.flossesandcrosses.blogspot.com

I have added vitamins to my daily routine now.  I have to tell you that my experience with Puritan's Pride has been wonderful.  Now, this is my own words and I didn't receive anything from this company.  But the prompt service and value for my money is so worth talking about.  I had a problem with the shipping address that was taken care of ASAP.  They have live chat which is great.  The buy 1 get 2 or buy 2 get 3 was such a deal.  Yes, you got five bottles of the vitamin for the price shown.  They even carry Vegetarian ones for those who want it.  My shipping was free because I spent over 50.00.  (Not that it is very hard to do that)  Plus they gave me 10% off my order.  (First order, I think)  Please check them out.  You can go to http://www.puritan.com or call 1-800-645-1030.  They use Pay Pal which I really like too.

I am still in the process of sorting, cleaning, and clearing.  We still have about two or three truck loads of stuff that needs to be moved.  But Rooster has been working alot and has been too tired and sore to worry about it at this time.  Poor guy now has a head cold.  I have been taking lots of C and knock on wood, have been ok.  I did get him started on a muli-vitamin with fiber.  I think this has been helping him.  His job is very physical and he is just all in when he gets home.  I got a gummi vitamin and set it next to his side of the bed.  So he takes it before he goes to bed.  I started Bri on Disney gummi vitamins too.  With the crazy get up at 4:30, get back by 6:30, go back to bed for a bit, and get back up thing, I am trying to make sure she gets enough rest, exercise, and good nutrition.  She has been staying up late.  So I think I need to leave her some more outside time to tire her out.

As for me, I think I have finally got a handle on this thyroid and adrenal disfunction thing.  I am taking my meds on time, taking my vitamins, and trying to take a few "time out" minutes in the day.  It has been so wonderfully warm here, that I can sit outside with my tea for a break in the afternoon.  I have also simplified my homeschool schedule.  I think I was trying to be super Mom, super Wife, and super Home Educator.  Plus taxi driver, chef, nurse, etc that comes with being a SAHM and home educator.

I have been using my crockpot and using more easy to prep meals.  That helps so much.  I popped a corned beef in yesterday morning and we had corned beef, carrots, and potatoes with about five minutes prep and just the time it takes to slice the meat.  Phew!!  Plus I am concentrating on a weeks worth of meal ideas.  I have very little storage and I find that things get lost in the refrig if I try to do longer.  So that is less stress too.

Well, I am off to the library and the park.  Have a most wonderful day.

First post of 2012

OK.  I have been AWOL.  The holiday usually gets me messed up for awhile.

I have to say that it was one of the best Christmases that I can remember.  My Rooster bought me a Christmas Pyrimid  (It is a scene on the bottom and propellers on the top that turn from the candle heat).  It is a German thing.  I have loved them since seeing them as a child at my great Aunt's house.  Plus he got me a Smoking Man.  (Also a German thing)  I will have to get a picture, as the Smoking Man looks like my Rooster.  And he has a wrench in his hand like Rooster does at work.  You put a cone of incense in it and the smoke comes out of the man's mouth and he has a pipe in his mouth.  Really cool.  Rooster knew right away that I had wanted these items for a very long time.  He really is a wonderful Hubby.

Plus he had the week between Christmas and New Years off and we really enjoyed the time all together.

Bri was up to her eyebrows in Playmobile stuff.  We found tons of it at Tuesday Mornings, Burke's, and other off price type stores.  So she was on cloud nine.

We brought more stuff from SIL's house to the apartment.  So I am in the process of getting stuff squared away again.

I am going to be putting together a household notebook.  I will share the process with you.

So much for today.  Please check out my craft blog at http://www.flossesandcrosses.blogspot.com   I have many updates there.

God Bless and have a wonderful day.
